Statement from the Inspector General of Policing on Recent Police Line-of-Duty Deaths and Injuries
“In recent months, policing communities across Ontario and Canada have experienced a series of tragic losses, including the line-of-duty deaths of Sûreté du Québec Sergeant Anaïs Fortin-Cozzens, Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Brandon Malcolm, Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali, Toronto Police Service Constable Marc Pinizzotto, and Service de police de la Ville de Montréal Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouane.
The recent death of Durham Regional Police Service Constable-in-Training Tyrone Magbitang and the serious injury of another Constable-in-Training while travelling to the Ontario Police College, adds to what has already been a profoundly difficult period for Canada’s policing sector.
Each of these losses is its own tragedy, felt most deeply by the families, loved ones, colleagues, police services, and communities directly affected. Collectively, their impact has been felt across the broader policing community and serves as a reminder of the risks accepted by those who choose a career dedicated to serving and protecting others.
As we mourn those who have lost their lives and support those recovering from injury, we honour the dedication, courage, and sacrifice of all police members across Canada. We also recognize the many police officers, civilian members, leaders, and police associations who support one another, stand alongside grieving families, and continue to serve their communities while carrying the weight of grief and loss.
On behalf of the Inspectorate of Policing, I extend my sincere condolences to all those affected by these tragedies. Our thoughts remain with the families, loved ones, colleagues, and communities who continue to feel their impact.”
