Sarnia Police Service Board and Sarnia Police Service
While the Sarnia Police Service navigates current issues of importance, the Inspector General has enhanced monitoring and increased engagement activities with the Board and the Service to support effective governance, accountability and compliance with Ontario’s policing framework, including the provision of policing that meets the needs of the City of Sarnia and Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
Police service boards oversee police services, establish strategic policies and priorities, and ensure the provision of adequate and effective policing in the communities they serve. The Inspector General's monitoring role helps ensure that police service boards are carrying out these responsibilities in accordance with provincial legislation and standards.
On September 23 and 24, 2026, the Inspector General and members of the IoP visited Sarnia and met with representatives of the Sarnia Police Service Board, the Sarnia Police Service’s leadership, and representatives of the Service’s two police associations. The meetings provided an opportunity for constructive dialogue about matters currently affecting the Board and Service, grounded in a shared focus on effective governance, accountability, public trust, and the provision of adequate and effective policing.
