An investigation was conducted into a complaint alleging that the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) failed to respond to a 911 call reporting the theft of a purse and cellphone from a residential building.
After reviewing the Findings Report, the Inspector General of Policing concluded that the OPS complied with the Community Safety and Policing Act, and provided adequate and effective police service delivery with respect to its call-taking, dispatch, and investigative responsibilities.
While not a compliance issue, the Inspector General encouraged the OPS to consider explicitly including elapsed time since an incident as a factor in its call-classification procedures to ensure consistency in prioritizing calls for service.
Outcome: Compliance with the CSPA and its regulations; Recommendation to revise procedure
