Decision INV-24-24: Inspector General finds Barrie Police Service Board member did not commit misconduct in relation to personal social media activity

Date of Decision: Oct. 29, 2026
  • Complaint Type: s. 106
  • N/A
  • Investigation Number: 24-24
  • Barrie Police Service Board

An investigation was conducted into allegations that Arif Khan, a member of the Barrie Police Service Board, committed misconduct by engaging with social media content on his personal X account that was alleged to be offensive.

After reviewing the Findings Report, the Inspector General concluded that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate many of the alleged social media interactions and that the conduct that could be attributed to Mr. Khan did not have a sufficient connection to his role as a Board member to constitute misconduct under the Code of Conduct. While the Inspector General did not find misconduct in this case, he noted that police service board members should exercise caution when using social media, as certain engagements with content may be perceived as endorsement and could, in other circumstances, give rise to misconduct concerns under the Code of Conduct.
